Residents Committee
New members:
New members have been introduced (Georges Lebrun)
Issues committee:
Sergio spoke about their idea to begin a 3-on-3 tournament because this was identified as a need for the young people who don’t have enough activities at the moment. They are considering several ideas for format, but are looking to connect with people and finding resources.
Xavier said they will be focusing on 14-19 year-olds, because these are some of the people they believe that will benefit the most from this type of activity. They are thinking of ideas for promotion (Facebook?)
Still exploring dates and what the possibilities could be; location is not yet determined either
Anyone interested in participating in this can contact Xavier
Xavier will also be bringing forward an Action Plan soon concerning the Lowertown survey done in some of the OCH communities of LT
Events committee (Christine):
Community cleanup is ready to go and will be this Saturday, the 7th of May
Many prizes were donated from local businesses and from Loblaws for the food.
Records will be kept from all of the organizations who will be donating this year so that next year will be easier
All that is needed is for people to come out, and some additional people will be needed as team captains at the cleanup.
Set-up will begin at 9am in front of the York Public School, and the team leaders should be there at least by 9:30. At 10am the cleanup begins and people will reconvene at York Street Public School at Noon for the barbeque and activities.
Bottle-free event
Options Bytown will be there to ensure people are not picking up needles and crack pipes
Possibly a new flyer could be created for Lowertown, Our Home for the purposes of outreach
Report of the coordinator:
Funding has been received from the City of Ottawa in the amount of 16,000$ for the Movies in the Park project.
A coordinator will be hired part-time to work on the project, and they will be facilitating movies in Lowertown, Vanier and Eastern Ottawa.
Jules Morin Park Revitalization committee is continuing to work on ways that we can help the Park be redeveloped so that the community has a say in the project.
On the 28th of May, at the Basse-ville en Fête event, there will be a survey to fill out for residents on what they want in the park. We are looking for volunteers to promote the survey and as well looking for some people to promote the Resident’s committee.
Erica will be having a meeting with a member of the Lowertown Community Association on the 10th of May.
On the 11th of May at 6:30pm, there will be a meeting here at the Resource Centre for people to become more familiar with the composition of the Lowertown, Our Home project
Erica will be leaving the Lowertown, Our Home project at the beginning of August to return to school. However, there will be renewed 2-year funding for the Coordinator position, so there will now be more continuity in the position.
Communications strategy:
Laurie spoke about how the committee can start to formalize its strategy of promoting and sharing the successes of the Residents committee. A committee on how to create an Action Plan for this would be a very good idea.
Erica says that it would be good to have some spokespeople who are bilingual to promote the committee in the media.
Laurie will send out a message to strike up this committee
Traffic concerns in the neighbourhood:
Barry spoke about the King Edward Avenue Task Force and their organization
Danny mentioned the cut-through traffic
Nathaniel gave an update on what is being done at the crosswalk of Beausoleil and Chapel. The city will be doing a traffic count this summer to see what the feasibility is of having a pedestrian crosswalk with a signal installed.
Barry asked Nathaniel what kind of streetscaping will be done on King Edward Avenue. Nathaniel will follow-up on this.
Ask at some of the events what the residents’ concerns are and encourage them come to the committee to committee to voice them as well.
Neighbourhood news/concerns:
Louise spoke about how the meetings could possibly start to rotate locations to try and drum up additional participants.
Fiona stated that she has concerned with the new development at Wurtemburg and Clarence. She is very worried that this will change the character of the neighbourhood. It was Jules Morin’s first home
There are very few homes in Lowertown East that have designated heritage sites, Erica did send out a document on the Heritage in Lowertown
Christine says that she will be moving away from Lowertown and that she will be therefore leaving as Chair of the Residents committee. At the next meeting we will discuss succession.
Actions to be taken:
Mary went through all the decisions taken by the Residents committee
Adjournment:
The meeting was adjourned at 8:03pm
The next meeting will be held June the 2nd
